Is Mattamy or Peter Gilgan really community oriented?

There are people who are truly community oriented and get involved in all things to do with the community – usually as a volunteer.  Local scouting, historical societies, church groups, service clubs etc are where they do their work.  And, they do it not only for the community but themselves – their inner self, not the ego.

And then there are those that try to show they are community spirited through donations and anything that gets them exposure in the press.  There are also those that donate but make no play for exposure.  They do it for the cause, not themselves.

Yesterday, the wife and I enjoyed a good day of sunburning at the Country Heritage Park 3rd Annual Country Renaissance Festival“.  The day was filled with medieval shenanigans, good humour, talented performers and, most of all, the Joust.  Real jousting in armour.  Had a truly exciting day and I recommend it to anyone, especially with kids.  Plan for this event in June 2012.

I remarked to one person that I had enjoyed the one in Mississauga, that had closed about 2005.  Tried to take my fiance there for a day but alas, it was no more.  I thought it had just gone bankrupt trying to compete with the CNE.   But no, seems the new landowners didn’t want it to continue.  Now, who would do that dastardly deed?

Now, this is one person’s version and I certainly welcome Mattamy to express their point of view and deny what happened.

Seems that Mattamy bought up the land for future expansion (still fallow as of 2011) and initially said that the Festival there could continue.  But then, the child disappointing, grumpy old lawyers said  cease and desist to this community oriented event.  Seems there was the sale of alcohol on the premises.  Much like those donation parties Peter Gilgan and his lawyers attend.  I guess they see so much abuse there they decided a bunch of parents and kids couldn’t handle themselves.

The Festival even offered to pay all the taxes – not a bad deal there Peter.   But, Peter listened to his lawyers and slammed the door on the community outing.

What hurts is that all the structures for this festival were in place, including a medieval fence.  Jousting grounds were established, as were the small theatres.  It is now all going to waste and rotting, surrounded by land not being used for development at this moment.  2005 to 2011 is quite a spread of time to just allow this festival to rot into the ground.

How is that for community service Mattamy?

Maybe you wouldn’t get enough press exposure by allowing the Festival to continue.  I’m sure you could have allowed it and they would have named something after you at the festival.  Maybe the “Peter Gilgan Pig Toss” or the “Peter Gilgan Theatre of the Absurd”.  Possibly team up with the performer “Zoltan the Adequate” as “Peter the Inadequate”.  Just some thoughts of how you could have contributed to this event and maybe even got nominated for “Entrepreneur of the Year” for your foresight in allowing a community event to continue.  I guess Entrepreneur of the Year  includes being a Grinch.

Now, I am wondering if Peter listened to his lawyers when he allowed the illegal wiring that put my children at risk.  I doubt it as the sale had gone through.  I guess I should have told Peter I was going to sell booze in my house and then the lawyers might have stepped in.

* The above is intended to show the reader examples of how to obtain a house inspector, no matter which builder you buy from. Remember, awards and advertising are designed to make you buy, not ensure you quality. We’ve shown that awards are not the standard on which to base your decision on. My use of my experiences are not made to embarass Mattamy Homes or Peter Gilgan but, are used because they are based on fact and show the larger picture that a house inspector is a requirment when buying a house, new or old from any builder. My experience only shows that in fact it can happen and is a fact of life. Your experiences with Mattamy may have differed but do not preclude what happened to me from happening again. Beware.
