Mattamy – methinks you advertise too much – hiding something?

Every Saturday, in the Toronto Star, there is a two page Mattamy ad.

Just like clockwork.

In addition to this media extravaganza, they usually have another one page ad.  In the Sun, we’ve seen infomercials written by someone on behalf of Mattamy or by Mattamy themselves and placed in the paper as a pseudo-article.  Recently, we’ve been hearing the cutsey ads on the radio.  Made to make you feel warm and fuzzy.

For a company with a lot of awards, you’d think they could cut back on the advertising and put the money into a little better quality control.  Look at the other builders and yes, they also advertise but, not the same intensity.

I think they rely on word-of-mouth for their sales, along with a reputation for quality.

If you are building right, you should be able to do well with showcasing your product, good reviews on the web and, swarms of people telling their friends how good the product is.  You do see that in Mattamy but you also see those wishing they hadn’t listened to their friends.  Some of these people even got flowers, free upgrades, etc, along with a J.D. Power and Associates survey.

Remember the Bracebridge episode.  Flooding basements, etc.  One woman who made the front page was a former Mattamy owner who decided to buy another.  Curses the day she made that decision.

With the issues that Mattamy has been involved in, I can understand them wanting to advertise and hopefully do some damage control.  Depending on people actually believing the ads.  It’s the kind of thing where someone apologizes to the nth degree about something.  When they do that, you always think there is something more that isn’t being said.  I guess the traditional word-of-mouth method of guaranteeing sales just isn’t cutting the mustard, at least for Mattamy.

I am looking forward to Mattamy opening up the sale office for North Oakville so I can give buyers a taste of the truth to balance the ads and sales pitches they will be inundated with when they consider a Mattamy home.  I don’t mind handing out information pamphlets to those passing by.

Least I can do as a public service.

Let them know that even the Town of Oakville (not even an apology)  won’t protect their interests so they should ensure they have a good lawyer and house inspector.

Even up the odds, so to speak.
