Bully Boys – have your met yours yet.

Do you remember the old movies with George Raft,  Humphrey Bogart, and Edward G. Robinson where the tough talking guy would be faced with some boys the mob boss sent over to either get him to change his mind or rearrange his facial features?  Ah, yes, the good old days sitting in the matinee eating your popcorn and being entertained.

Methinks that Mattamy watched too many of these movies. In my case, I was putting pamphlets on the windshields of vehicles and someone tried to take them all off.  I informed them that that was theft.  He left and and from where he went, two rather stout, built like a brick *hit-house guys in tight Mattamy shirts starting walking over to me.

I don’t think they were going to invite me to the local for a few pints but, when I informed them what I was doing was legal and that the police would not like them interfering, they decided to leave. Obviously they had not watched too many of the Bogart movies as they left once I showed some backbone to them.

Right after, a visibly angry Peter Gilgan strutted over and, well, the rest is history.

Bully Boy tactics.

I thought I was the only one until I read a thread in a forum by Andy Shaw.  Appears he was representing a client and was duly informed by the Mattamy rep that he was not to be involved in the PDI.  Andy showed documentation from Tarion stating it was legal for him to assist the new homewoner.  At that, a phone call was made and a number of Mattamy trucks showed up.  I don’t think this was an emergency work squad coming over to immediately fix all PDI faults.  Andy though, kept his cool and called Tarion and once the Mattamy rep was informed by Tarion to allow it to happen, the PDI continued with Andy in tow.

Bully boy tactics?  What else could it be.

For those that received the flowers and perfect house, you probably find this hard to believe.  And those that know nothing about construction and just signed the PDI without worrying or wanting a scene with Mattamy, I just hope you’re not paying the price now in terms of poor quality.

Don’t let Mattamy or any builder do the bully boy on you.  Document everything on your PDI and report same to Tarion and thus protect yourself.  Get a house inspector to add weight to your claims.  And forget the threatening letters from Mattamy.  Tell the truth, document everything and report all to the appropriate authorities and you just might win.

I say might.  In my case former Mayor Mulvale (the one getting the Mattamy donation) really did nothing on the fact that Mattamy did illegal wiring to close a sale.  I lost but it doesn’t mean you have to.  Wish I’d had a house inspector at the time to give advice.

Remember,  a builder may stoop to using bully boy tactics to ensure you do the right thing according to them.  A house inspector can be your supporter in those times.

Note:  the photos used are not to be taken literally and only reflect gangster movies and to enhance the topic of bully boy with a non-representative image of the reality of the situation.  I would assume that Mattamy and other builders don’t resort to firearms in their dealings with customers.  Note the word “assume”.
