Mattamy Homes – are you using Chinese Drywall??

My post on February 12th featured a letter from Jacksonville, Florida.   On top of a plethora of problems they were experiencing there was a lot of electrical and phone issues.  I just read an article about the Chinese Drywall problem.

In this Wall Street Journal article, they state:

“Some home builders already struggling in Florida’s dismal housing market are facing another headache: The Chinese-made drywall they used is causing unpleasant odors and possibly leading to electric problems in dozens of homes constructed during the housing boom.”

With the description given in my February 12th blog, it is quite possible that the person in Florida could be living in a home with the Chinese drywall.  I, of course, offer Mattamy Homes the opportunity to rebut any thoughts that they used the Chinese Drywall in their homes in Florida.

Here is a short cut from the February 12th blog on this problem.  Certainly unusual electrical problems to me.

There are also intercoms, and strange buzzing sounds will randomly start coming from them and you can’t stop them no matter what button you push. They’ll also turn on and off by themselves and many times we’ve found that the outside intercom would be on so people outside could hear what’s happening in the house. Also the dimming lights will suddenly come on leading me to believe our lights are somehow hooked up with a neighbors. Our water and electricity bill has had months of enormous expense, once $700, which caused the electric company to come to our house and ask us what we did to make the bill go so high when we had done nothing different. They read the meter and said it was accurate. Our phones also crackle when someone will pick up in another room and we’ve replaced the phones with new ones because the man Mattamy sent assured us that would “fix it.”

I guess if they make a few donations and hand out some flowers, the problem will go away.

  1. Sorry for the pseudonym, but I’ve heard stories about Mattamy coming after people who tried to bring their errors to light. I am the person who wrote my about my experience in Jacksonville, FL. I just wanted to thank you for writing this blog that exposes Mattamy and their horrible homes and for the article about the drywall. I had not heard of this problem, but after reading the article it seems to fit the bill for what’s been going on here. We have dust on the furniture constantly which might be a result of this drywall problem. Our family has noticed since we moved in this house that we all seem to have respiratory problems such as frequent sneezing and waking up in the morning with stuffy noses and clogged throats. We have had more problems since my last post. Now instead of the heat not working (it somehow fixed itself?)what was working, the air conditioning, now does not work. A couple of weeks ago, we had a pretty bad thunderstorm and the lights in the kitchen, master bedroom, and foyer came on by themselves 7 times. Things seem to be falling apart by the day, but it is my hope to have a home inspector not connected with Mattamy come and tell us just what all is wrong with our house. Thanks again for your dedication in this whole thing and I pray that something will come of it, if nothing more than preventing other people from making the same mistake we did!

  2. I just read this other article (http://letustalk.wordpress.com/2009/03/18/chinese-made-dry-walls-making-houses-sick/) I found through a link and I am now convinced our home was built with this Chinese drywall. We have also noticed the rotten-egg odor from the sinks, our kitchen faucet moans now when we turn it, and our brand new dryer isn’t drying the towels properly and the new washer was making strange noises right where it was connected to the wall. Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, I am definitely going to investigate further.
