Mattamy Homes – do they own Liliputan furniture?

Awhile back, I described a Mattamy house that was built in such a way that the owner cannot put in a garage door opener, unless he is willing to have a major re-fit done to the house and door.

I honestly think that those who work for Mattamy must be small people with small Liliputan furniture – you know, the kind that you buy for your daughter’s doll-house.

The attached pictures only go to show you that you should look closely at the model homes on display and ensure with you contract that you house will be built with the same care. The pictures show two doors – one from the garage and the other into the basement. For moving purposes, this straight through arrangement is very helpful. Unfortunately, the normal 29″ door opening is reduced to 25″ as the basement and garage door must be opened to the same wall and the garage door cannot be opened fully. In addition, and probably for code reasons (Yeah, I know, Mattamy might have followed code on this one), the garage door self closes and there is no hookback. Thus, you see the wedge arrangement –  an arrangement that doesn’t work well as people will kick out the wedge when moving stuff down the stairs.

Why would Mattamy put in a door that doesn’t let you utilize the full width of the door space? This could prevent the moving of furniture to the basement if you finish the basement. I mean, couldn’t they add a couple of inches to the floorplan to allow this door to open fully. I notice that the foreman of the project has quite the side yard at the end of the house  row. A foot of that strip would have probably allowed the house to have a proper door opening. But then, I guess Mattamy looks after their own, not the customer.

Again, a good reason to have a house inspector hired to monitor construction and warn you about potential problems. And, maybe your contract should be more specific on what you perceive to be necessary in the construction of YOUR home. In today’s economic climate, the builders will all try to cut corners and save money in order to survive. But it is your back they will survive on.
