“Mr. Cairo said Mattamy went ahead with sales before receiving final approval from the city because it believed it was not affected by the floodplain issues. It is unclear, however, whether final approval would have mattered in the face of the environment ministry’s order.”
The above quote really says it all about the attitude Mattamy Homes has in dealing with the government and taxpayers.
“went ahead with sales before receiving final approval “ Just like they went ahead with construction on land that had been recently fertilized with human waste – contrary to government regulations. Also, just like they went and did illegal landfill, and are now trying to get a back-dated permit to fix the “problem“
The people at Kanata are certainly in a bind and all because they were lead to believe that they were buying homes from a reputable builder who should know better and follow the regulations. I for one know they don’t and if you’ve been reading my blog, you know how they illegally close sales. And, sometimes with the complicity of local government, such as the Town of Oakville. Maybe in this case in the Ottawa region, local government is standing up to this company that has run roughshod over the regulations concerning health and safety.
In today’s world, people are more aware of their environment and are asking that the government ensure that we don’t do things that will harm the future of our country and to protect the interests of our children. Unfortunately, some companies are doing it the old fashioned way – donate lots of money, get good press and cover up the wrongs that are committed. They rely on their advertising clout to ensure that not all things are reported and to ensure that local government (like the Town of Oakville) cause issues to go away. Personally, I’ve even experienced the bully boy method. I only hope those in Ottawa don’t experience that. I found that non-abusive and non-obstructive picketing of a site to cause them to threaten legal action. Yes, one of their executives made an appointment to see me and, although a half-hour late at the meeting, he did listen to my concerns. Yes, listened but that was as far as it got. Mr. Luigi Favit was strangely silent after listening to my complaint. I guess the safety of children, good construction practices and treating a customer fairly didn’t fall within his mandated management policy.
Keith and Danielle Chadwick (http://mattamyfairwindsphase5.wordpress.com) are informing the public that not is all well with Mattamy Homes and showing the type of builder they are outside of the advertising and JD Power’s awards. From what I have read, Mattamy Homes knew they were selling homes prior to getting authorization to build and setting dates on something that wasn’t even authorized. If true, then that is a major type of consumer fraud that would be expected from a flim flam man, not a corporation that advertises a reputation bar none.
Next time you see the Mattamy Homes ad with the children safely seating in a beautifully constructed home remember, truth does not always exist in advertising. Oh, and for those that are going to wait and see what happens, I’d strongly suggest that you hire a house inspector to protect your investment because, if what I read on the Chadwick’s blog is correct, and the Phase 4 is being built on slim money, then I’d want to make sure the quality I am paying for goes into the construction.
